About the festival:

The Oslo Medieval Festival Foundation was established in 1994. The Foundation’s overarching purpose is to help maintain awareness that the city of Oslo has its roots in the Medieval Ages. The festival is an entertaining celebration for the whole family, highlighting Oslo’s exciting and diverse history. With crafts, theatre, educational activities, concerts, and a wide range of activities for young and old, we are a festival for everyone!

Finding the fortress:

Akershus Castle and Fortress is centrally located near Aker Brygge and Kvadraturen in Oslo city centre. There are two entrances. Sortiporten is the entrance on Myntgata, closest to Kvadraturen. The main gate is across the bridge from Festningsplassen, leading to Von Sundts plass within the fortress grounds.

Akershus Fortress is protected historical ground. We ask for the public’s understanding that we all share a responsibility to preserve the area in the best possible way.

Our market:

The Oslo Medieval Festival’s annual market bustles with life, featuring craftspeople and vendors specializing in Northern European medieval goods. Here you can watch artisans working in their stalls practicing traditional crafts, or sample temptations made on site. Our hand-picked merchants stand ready to entice you with a wide variety of wares and sensory experiences.

Do you want to participate? Application form can be found here: Apply for a stand.

Want to be a volunteer?

Volunteering at the Oslo Medieval Festival is fun and sociable! It means you can work at the festival as, for example, a gate guard, help out with the activities on site, and not least—live in the Middle Ages for an entire weekend!

If you’d prefer to work more behind the scenes, we always need help with setup in the days before or teardown in the days after the festival (in which case you’re welcome as our guest at the festival itself), or with making decorations or keeping the backstage areas in order during the festival.

You can choose whether to join us for all the days or just one.

Application form can be found here: Bli frivillig.
